Cannabis Diseases Overview

Powdery Mildew

Considered one of the most destructive pests, Powdery Mildew can infiltrate plant tissue and remain undetected. It typically appears about two weeks into flowering, potentially ruining a mature crop and causing significant economic losses. It is believed to spread through clones, but its transmission via seeds is still uncertain.

Symptoms: Begins as white, powdery spots on the upper leaf surface, eventually coating the entire leaf.

Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd)

Originally identified in hops, HLVd can also infect cannabis, often causing more severe effects in cannabis plants. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth and smaller, looser buds with fewer trichomes. Recovery requires a lengthy tissue culture process to produce a new, viroid-free plant.

Symptoms: Stunted growth with small, narrow, or discolored leaves during the vegetative stage; small bud sites with reduced trichomes during flowering.

Beet Curly Top Virus

Cannabis infected with this virus displays distorted growth. Leaves may curl or twist, and plants may develop shortened internodes at branch tips.

Symptoms: Stunted growth, bright yellow leaves, upward leaf curling, and twisted new growth.

Lettuce Chlorosis Virus

Early infection in cannabis and hemp leads to stunted growth, though visual symptoms may not manifest until several weeks into flowering.

Symptoms: Yellowing leaves that roll up and become brittle during the flowering stage.

Botrytis (Bud Rot/Grey Mold)

This mold can remain dormant for long periods before sporulating. The infection typically begins within the bud, making early detection challenging.

Symptoms: Brown or grey tissue emerging from inside the flower.

Pythium

Affects a wide range of crops, including cannabis. Pathogens may originate from various host plants.

Symptoms: Root browning, rot, and crown rot, leading to stunted, wilted, and yellowing leaves.

Fusarium

This fungus can remain dormant in soil for years before infecting a viable host. There is no effective treatment for fusarium.

Symptoms: Brown and necrotic areas on roots, discolored lesions near the soil line, and yellowing, wilting leaves.

Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV)

Discovered in 1930, TMV was the first virus identified. It causes infectious diseases in tobacco plants and can also affect cannabis.

Symptoms: Leaves develop a characteristic mosaic pattern of alternating yellow and green spots.

Russet Mites

These mites are resistant to most pest treatments, making careful screening of incoming plants essential. Visual detection of mature mites is possible with a 14X loupe, but eggs and nymphs are often missed. They may also act as hosts for other plant viruses.

Detecting Hop Latent Viroid in Cannabis:

HLVd won’t kill the plant or even cause obvious symptoms of infection (i.e., curling or yellowing leaves); however, plants will show subtle symptoms that are often referred to as “dudding”.
During the vegetative stage, HLVd-infected plants grow shorter with smaller leaves and tighter node spacing.
Flowering plants infected with HLVd have smaller, looser buds with much fewer trichomes.
One client estimation that cannabis plants infected with HLVd had half the cannabinoid content of healthy plants and overall yield was reduced 30%.

How does Hop Latent Viroid spread?

HLVd is most commonly spread via infected tools and equipment, which is why cultivators should always sterilize their equipment before starting work on a new plant.

HLVd can also spread through cloning when cuttings are taken from an infected mother. And because symptoms of HLVd are not always obvious in the vegetative stage, it can be hard to identify infected mother plants. This is especially true when infection occurs later in the plant’s development since stunted growth will not be as apparent.

How can Hop Latent Viroid be Controlled?

Although HLVd can be eliminated from a cannabis or hemp plant via tissue culture, it is a long and laborious process that should only be reserved for cultivars that are critical to your business.

As with most plant pathogens, prevention is key. Good sanitation practices will go a long way in preventing the spread of HLVd and all other plant pathogens. Use fresh gloves each time you handle a new plant and sterilize tools often. Visitors and staff whole also use footbaths before entering the growing area and wear hairnets, beard nets, gloves, and coveralls.

Cultivators should also screen mother plants with qPCR assays to ensure they are virus-free before taking any cuttings. Cultivators should also screen and incoming clones with qPCR assays to make sure they are not introducing infected plants to their growing area.

The results of Leafreport's large-scale CBD testing investigation were announced, and the conclusions were worrisome.

The results of extensive CBD testing study were announced, and the conclusions were worrisome. Only 7% of the CBD companies they evaluated, according to their research, undergo legitimate contamination testing for pesticides, heavy metals, and microbiological contamination.

Leafreport is an Israeli company that conducts product reviews, independent testing, and provides consumer education resources. The firm conducts research on CBD products on the market and publishes the findings on its website. The watchdog organization conducted independent lab testing on 22 different CBD-infused beverages in 2020 and discovered numerous discrepancies between the actual quantity of CBD present in the beverage and what the product's label claimed.

The consumer advocacy group discovered a lot of variations throughout the CBD market in this newest survey, which was completed in late May of 2022. They looked at 4,384 goods from 188 brands for their analysis, with the purpose of examining overall transparency in the CBD industry. The CBD market is, predictably, not very transparent, based on the data they share.

Twenty percent of the products tested did not conduct any purity tests to look for microorganisms, pesticides, or heavy metals. In 2021, 25% of the brands examined by Leafreport did not conduct any purity tests.
In 2021, 42 percent of brands tested practically all of their products for potency (90 percent-100 percent correct) and shared the results with consumers from third-party labs.
Only 12% of brands were able to keep all of their goods within acceptable potency variance limits.
In comparison to 84 percent in 2021, 88 percent of brands that tested their products for potency had at least one product test outside the 10% variation for potency.
Pesticides (such as glyphosate) were not tested in 28 percent of cases, heavy metals (such as arsenic) were not tested in 26 percent of cases, and microorganisms were not tested in 24 percent of cases (like bacteria).
In 2021, two brands did not conduct any lab testing for purity or potency, compared to three brands in 2021.

from any licensed entity that is part of the supply chain for research and development, without a requirement to report the results.

This guide will help you to start Testing for Research and Development of cannabis products. Save time using our LIMS system to take proper steps and precautions to automate your work flow as smooth as possible.

1. Select our Lab to Place an Order.

Login to Confident Cannabis. If it's your first time, you may see a popup to select wholesale or lab. Choose Lab for services.
Select and click on the Order Lab Test Icon or New Lab Order to the left in the main menu.

Locate California Ag Labs and lick on Place Order .

2. Add New Sample.

Select and click on Add New Sample .

Select your license if it requests for one, or select skip .

3. Entering New Sample Information.

Sample entry form will display fields that collects necessary details about your sample.
For RND samples you will only need to fill in the Sample Details fields, at minimum.
Please select the categories that best reflect the sample you desire to be tested.

4. Completing Details.

When you have filled out the information and selected the test(s) you wish, you may click on Save & Close .
If you have more of the same type of sample with the same tests you wish and just need a different sample name, select Save & Add Another .

5. Selecting Pickup Address.

6. Submitting Order.

After you've verified all of your samples and their tests, you may select Submit Order . You may also enter any useful information in the Additional Comments section that can be brought to our attention (or a phone call).

Your order is now submitted! You may still edit the order for any changes if its status is set to placed, before we obtain the sample.

8. Printing Chain of Custody (COC).

Go to the order that you wish to print out a COC.
Select the Order Actions button and select Chain of Custody.
Print and Sign before the samples are sent out (located under distributor employee - name, date, signature).

8. Conclusion.

Chain of Custody should accompany all samples traveling. COC is used to verify distributed samples for law enforcement and BCC.

BCC - Branded Merchandise Fact Sheet

The Bureau of Cannabis Control (Bureau) recently published a new fact sheet providing guidance on the approval and sale of branded merchandise.

“Branded merchandise” includes clothing, hats, pencils, pens, keychains, mugs, water bottles, beverage glasses, notepads, lanyards, or cannabis accessories with the name or logo of a state licensed commercial cannabis business.

(See Cal. Code Regs., tit. 16, § 5000(b).) Licensees may sell the items enumerated above without first obtaining Bureau approval.

Branded merchandise items that are not specifically identified in section 5000(b) of the Bureau’s regulations cannot be sold without prior written approval from the Bureau.

Licensees selling branded merchandise without the prior written approval from the Bureau may be subject to disciplinary action.

Licensees may email requests for branded merchandise approval to BCC@dca.ca.gov . All requests for approval should contain the phrase “Request for Branded Merchandise Approval” in the email subject line. The body of the email should include the following information:

Licensee name and license number.
Description of each branded merchandise item to be approved for sale.
Picture of each branded merchandise item to be approved for sale.

Branded merchandise does not include items containing cannabis or any items that are considered food. (See Cal. Code Regs., tit. 16, § 5000(b).)

A licensed retailer may sell their own branded merchandise to retail customers. Retailers are not authorized to sell the branded merchandise of other licensees.

A licensed distributor may distribute their own or another licensee’s branded merchandise.

Branded merchandise is considered advertising and marketing and is subject to the advertising and marketing requirements of the Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act and the Bureau’s regulations. Branded merchandise:

Must identify the licensee responsible for the advertising content, including the responsible licensee’s state license number, on the branded merchandise.
Cannot be sold while a licensee’s license is suspended.
Cannot be designed in any manner likely to appeal to anyone under 21 years of age.

BCC - Notice Regarding Expiration of Medical Marijuana Identification Cards

On June 30, 2020, the Governor issued another executive order, Executive Order N-71-20, affecting the expiration date of Medical Marijuana Identification Cards (MMIC) issued under Health and Safety Code section 11362.71, which concerns identification cards for persons authorized to engage in the medical use of cannabis and their designated primary caregivers.

The new executive order extends the timelines in Executive Order N-65-20 for an additional 60 days. Therefore, MMICs that would otherwise have expired between March 4, 2020 and any day within 120 days from May 19, 2020 remain valid for 120 days from May 19, 2020.

Retailers licensed by the Bureau must accept MMICs that have an expiration date on or after March 4, 2020, as valid during the 120-day period provided by the executive order. Please note that the executive order only applies to MMICs issued under Health and Safety Code section 11362.71 and does not apply to medicinal cannabis recommendations obtained from a patient's physician.

Scientists Create New Method to Store Marijuana Pollen

Researchers have developed a way to determine the viability of pollen germination in marijuana plants, as well as a simple method of storing cannabis pollen for long periods of time, according to a new study.

For marijuana cultivators , the results could prove useful, helping them avoid potentially costly mistakes in the process and ensuring consistency and quality in their crops across growing cycles.

Ensuring long-term storage of pollen is important for cultivators because of the central role it plays in generating seeds. Taking pollen from a male plant and rubbing it on the hairs of a female plant—typically about halfway through the flowering cycle—will enable the female plant to produce buds that contains seeds, which along with cloning is one way to propagate and maintain strains.

The study, which was partly funded by the Canadian government, has “several implications,” co-author Igor Kovalchuk told Marijuana Moment.

USDA drops DEA hemp testing requirement for 2020, while FDA acknowledges demand for CBD

Federal agriculture officials will delay the requirement that all THC testing on hemp crops must be performed at laboratories registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

And food and drug regulators say it’s a “fool’s errand” to get people to stop taking over-the-counter CBD.

The testing delay comes after farmers and states alike complained there wouldn’t be enough DEA labs to handle demand. The U.S. Department of Agriculture acknowledges the complaints in an update Thursday.

“We now better understand how the limited number of DEA-registered labs will hinder testing and better understand the associated costs with disposing of product that contains over 0.3% THC could make entering the hemp market too risky,” USDA wrote.

“We were able to reach an agreement (with DEA) that we are going to be able to provide some relief from the laboratory certification process for this crop year,” Greg Ibach, undersecretary for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, told members at the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) meeting this week in Arlington, Virginia.

Proposed Regulations for Appellations Of Origin

On February 20, 2020 the California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) issued proposed regulations for Appellations of Origin.

So, what exactly is an appellation of origin and what will this program do? In the words of CDFA:

“An appellation of origin is a protected designation that identifies the geographical origin of a product and how that product was produced. CDFA’s Cannabis Appellations Program will promote regional cannabis products and local businesses, prevent the misrepresentation of a cannabis product’s origin, and support consumer confidence about a cannabis product’s origin and characteristics.”

The regulations proposed by CDFA would make changes to existing regulations applicable to cannabis cultivators, as well as add an entirely new Chapter 2 (entitled “Cannabis Appellations Program”) to Division 8 (entitled “Cannabis Cultivation”) of the CDFA regulations...

California Notices Emergency Cannabis Regulations Requiring QR Code Certificate

California Bureau of Cannabis Control (Bureau) provided notice to the public of proposed emergency cannabis regulations that would make it mandatory for cannabis businesses to post their unique Quick Response Code (QR Code) certificate in storefront windows and carry it with them while transporting or delivering cannabis.

Smartphone users are able to use their smartphone camera to scan the displayed QR Code, which automatically links to the Bureau’s Online License Search and confirms the cannabis retailer’s license status. The system also displays the retailer’s address and license location to ensure that the information is not counterfeit.

Important Announcement Regarding External Transfers for METRC Users

California Lab to Test Commercial Cannabis Products

California Lab facility will test products that have to pass state compliance tests for safety, potency standards.

On C Street, next to the post office, is an unmarked building – while plain looking from the outside, step inside and it’s a state-of-the-art testing laboratory where Certified Ag Labs will conduct testing on marijuana and agricultural products.

Robert Myers owns Certified Ag Labs, LLC and worked with the city of Marysville to get the proper credentials to operate a commercial testing facility in town.

With the city’s July passage of ordinance 1418 for a development agreement for a cannabis and agriculture laboratory, the lab is now just waiting for state approval to open for business.

The lab is International Standardization for Organization (ISO) certified and will test cannabis products that are sold commercially and have to pass state compliance tests for safety and potency standards. The lab will not be open to the public or for use by individual consumers Myers said.

“The problem is if its (cannabis products are) not lab tested, all these things we’re talking about all the metals, all the pesticides that they’re inhaling them, they’re bringing them into their system,” Myers said.

Lab testing process

To have commercial cannabis products tested at the lab, businesses and commercial cannabis growers can place orders through the lab’s website. Then the lab’s vehicle will retrieve samples, barcode and scan the batch of samples before they arrive at the lab.

The lab functions like a clock where the samples cycle through to be tested: First samples enter the sample receiving room to be sorted. Next, samples go to the prep room where specialized machinery like a cryogenic mill freezes products like edibles into a powder, to make them easier to test. Then the prepared samples go to the biology and chemistry labs where they are placed into machines like incubators and microwaves that conduct precise testing with automated machinery.

“Removing human error is a big thing that we’re going for here,” said Lab Director Dan Roettger of the automation the lab uses.

The total process takes between three and five days, with costs ranging from $600 to $1,000, Myers said.

A sample can have between six to 11 tests run to check for levels of harmful contaminants. The lab tests for pesticides, heavy metals and residual solvents used in the extraction process. They also test for microbes such as e-coli and salmonella and mycotoxins caused by bacteria.

Roettger said that any cannabis product sold commercially is labeled with what percentage THC – tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal psychoactive ingredient of cannabis – the product contains.

The total ratio of THC or CBD, which is cannabidiol, the inactive ingredient of cannabis in a product is called potency. Potency is important for recreational and medicinal cannabis users to understand so they are aware of the dose they are consuming.

“Anything that is labeled right now it has to test within 10 percent of that label,” Roettger said.

Labs like Certified Ag Labs are a growing industry across the state, with laboratories cropping up in the Bay Area and Sacramento, but the Marysville lab is one of the few in the Yuba-Sutter area. Myers said he hopes the lab can help make cannabis products more safe for consumers.

“The biggest thing to understand for the consumer is the importance of getting whatever they purchase, anything with cannabis any type of cannabis or CBD to make sure that it’s lab tested,” Myers said.

Marysville Council Approves Lab to Test Cannabis Products

First step to complete adoption of industry in Marysville, California.

Marysville City Council members approved a permit for Certified Ag Labs, LLC on Tuesday night, which allows the new cannabis testing lab to be operational as soon as it’s ready.

The benefits for the city are two-fold according to City Manager Marti Brown: the revenue boost that Marysville will receive in the first year is projected to be $10,000; and there is opportunity for further expansion of the city ordinance that pertains to adult use (21-and-over) and delivery.

“Adult-use is a game changer,” Brown said. “No need for the (medical) card. Adults 21 and over can walk in and get recreational marijuana.”

Brown said she hopes to bring the proposed expansion of the ordinance before the council in October or November.

“We’re definitely moving in the right direction,” Brown said.

It starts with the cannabis testing facility, located at 430 C. Street, which will never be open to the public, owner Robert Myers said.

Myers said the lab is strictly focused on safe testing of a variety of cannabis products brought in from area manufacturers.

“The purpose of our laboratory is to bring in a good, healthy product to the environment. Right now there are so many problems with people growing marijuana, cannabis, consumables,” Myers said. “There’s so many toxins that are in the environment right now – our high-tech laboratory allows us to test all the impurities.”

Myers said as soon as the products enter the facility they’re rendered “unusable.” Myers said that enables the testing facility to properly check for pesticides, minerals and other elements.

He said making the cannabis safe is one of his top priorities in the lab.

“It’s (not) all about smoking and getting high,” Myers said. “Really marijuana is all about curing different ailments like back disease, heart disease, diabetes. Our bodies thrive on the healthy part, just not the THC – (Tetrahydrocannabinol – the principal psychoactive ingredient of cannabis).”

Marysville Mayor Ricky A. Samayoa said while the economic benefit with cannabis legalization is not to be denied, the city wants to make sure the products are processed correctly.

“Our goal is to provide safe and accessible cannabis products for the public,” Samayoa said. “Labs are the way to do that. There’s plenty of demand for them.”

Samayoa said that he’s also on board for expanding the city ordinance in the future, which he hopes can be done as soon as possible.

Samayoa said the dispensaries and labs are currently at a disadvantage due to the influx of mobile cannabis deliveries out in the neighborhoods.

“Once we expand the ordinance that’s going to ensure that mobile delivery folks have a license too,” Samayoa said.

Myers said expanding the ordinance is a positive for Marysville.

“Let’s legalize all of it and then we can control it and make sure it’s done properly,” Myers said.
