On February 20, 2020 the California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) issued proposed regulations for Appellations of Origin.

So, what exactly is an appellation of origin and what will this program do? In the words of CDFA:
“An appellation of origin is a protected designation that identifies the geographical origin of a product and how that product was produced. CDFA’s Cannabis Appellations Program will promote regional cannabis products and local businesses, prevent the misrepresentation of a cannabis product’s origin, and support consumer confidence about a cannabis product’s origin and characteristics.”
The regulations proposed by CDFA would make changes to existing regulations applicable to cannabis cultivators, as well as add an entirely new Chapter 2 (entitled “Cannabis Appellations Program”) to Division 8 (entitled “Cannabis Cultivation”) of the CDFA regulations...
